The Old Time Music Jam is a monthly gathering of acoustic musicians who play traditional Appalachian fiddle music. Bring your own meal and join in or listen in on an informal jam session. Musicians of all levels are welcome. Come to play or just to listen, bring your family and friends, and enjoy the community music can create!

"Reflecting the cultures that settled North America, the roots of old-time music are in the traditional musics of the British Isles and Europe. African influences are notably found in instruments such as the banjo. In some regions French and German sources are also prominent. While many dance tunes and ballads can be traced to European sources, many others are of North American origin.

Old-time music represents perhaps the oldest form of North American traditional music other than Native American music, and thus the term "old-time" is an appropriate one.

Fiddlin' John Carson made some of the first commercial recordings of traditional American country music for the Okeh label in 1923. The recordings became hits. Okeh, which had previously coined the terms "hillbilly music" to describe Appalachian and Southern fiddle-based and religious music and "race recording" to describe the music of African American recording artists, began using "old-time music" as a term to describe the music made by artists of Carson's style. The term thus originated as a euphemism, but proved a suitable replacement for other terms that were considered disparaging by many inhabitants of these regions. It remains the term preferred by performers and listeners of the music. It is sometimes referred to as "old-timey" or "mountain music" by long-time practitioners."

Learn how to grow your own ferns from spores with Linda Rohleder and Richard Pillar.
Register for April 6 - Grow Your Own Ferns

Take your native plant growing skills to the next level. In this hands-on workshop, learn how to grow native ferns from spores with Wild Woods Restoration Project.

We will discuss fern identification principles, fern lifecycle, and how to collect spores. We will also touch on the importance of native plants and how growing ferns from spores helps maintain genetic diversity. Finally, we will learn and practice a simple technique to sow our spores.

Participants will leave with containers of sown spores of two different local, native species. The small 5"x5" containers should be placed at a window in indirect sunlight and will need care for 1-2 years indoors before the ferns will be ready to go outside. Participants will need to obtain their own misting spray bottle to use at home after the spores germinate.

This class is designed for adult participants. Space is limited to 20 ppl.
$40 per participant. Registration required.

Join us for a Community Farm Work Day at Hilltop Hanover Farm!
Register for April 21 Community Farm Work Day!

Do you enjoy getting your hands dirty and working outdoors? Have you ever kept potatoes in your kitchen for a little too long and wondered why they begin to grow? Then mark your calendars for our Community Farm Work Day on Sunday, April 21, 2024 from 12:30 - 3:30pm as we plant potatoes! This event will take place at Hilltop Hanover Farm located in Yorktown Heights, NY.

Potatoes are planted in early spring, growing slowly but surely for many weeks until they are large enough for harvest in midsummer. Jump into the field alongside our farmers and pitch in with planting rows of seed potatoes. Enjoy working as a community to help this once-a-season task fly by!

Volunteers will learn about the process of preparing and curing seed potato, and best practices for planting. This task will involve bending and light raking.

No prior experience necessary. All ages and abilities welcome, but please note that youngsters must have adult supervision. We recommend joining close to the approximate start time, for training and to ensure there's time to take part in the planting.
